CALBAYOG CITY, Samar — Amidst somber skies and light drizzle, 11 delegations from state universities and colleges across Region 8 proudly donned their school colors as they gathered for the grand opening of the 38th Eastern Visayas Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Games, December 8.
The host institution, Northwest Samar State University warmly welcomed athletes, coaches, and officials from Biliran Province State University (BiPSU), Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Leyte Normal University (LNU), Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT), Southern Leyte State University (SLSU), Samar State University (SSU), University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), University of the Philippines Tacloban College (UPTC), and Visayas State University (VSU) to their proud campus.
After braving the rain and gracing the streets of Calbayog City in a grand 2.7-kilometer parade, the participants performed a three-minute saludo, followed by the entrance of colors with the SUCs’ vibrant banners.
In his welcome message, host university president Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo emphasized fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship over mere competition.
“Let us remember that the true victory of these games lies not just in the trophies and medals but in the friendship we forge while competing, the lessons we learn while winning or losing, and the collective pride we feel while celebrating as one Eastern Visayas State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association,” Dr. Pecayo said.
The opening ceremony also featured a notable lineup of guests of honor, including Sen. Imee Romualdez Marcos, former Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary, Hon. Benhur Abalos, and TINGOG Partylist Representative, Hon. Jude Acidre. While Sen. Marcos and Hon. Abalos were unable to attend in person, they shared their messages of support via video message.
Hon. Abalos, in his video message, reflected on the event’s theme “Spark to Victory.” According to him, he is reminded that every journey towards success begins with a single spark.
“A spark of self-realization to believe in our own potential. A spark of passion to fuel our dreams, and a spark of dedication to persevere in our pursuit of victory. Remember, champions are made, not born… maaaring magmula sa grupong ito ang susunod na gagawa ng pangalan sa Palarong Pambansa o Olympics. Kaya magtiwala sa iyong kakayahan at pasalamatan ang mga taong umaalalay sa inyo sa paghuhubog [ng] inyong mga talent at kalakasan,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Sen. Marcos, although she intended to attend and grace the event, was held back by the bad weather and stopped at Tacloban City, Leyte. Channeling her inner Waraynon, she explained the essence of competition.
“Ano ang ibig sabihin ng kumpetisyon? Hindi ka pikon ‘pag talo, hindi ka mayabang pag nanalo. Kasi an tinuod, wala naman talo. Lahat nagpartisipar, congratulations, panalo na kayo,” the senator expressed.
Hon. Acidre, however, graced the occasion with his presence, delivering an inspiring message that encouraged the athletes to pursue excellence and unity throughout the week-long games.
NwSSU president Dr. Pecayo officially declared the 38th edition of the SCUAA Games 2024 open, and concluded the opening ceremony with a field demo performance and a firework display.
Starting tomorrow, December 9 until Friday, December 13, the event will feature intense competitions across various sports disciplines as the 11 SUCs vie for glory.
