NOVEMBER 11, 2022 ─ Society of English Majors, the recognized student organization of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English of Samar State University, officially opened the English Month Celebration with the theme, “Reliving the Past and Embracing the Future through Literature” at the College of Education Student Lounge.
BSED English and students from other majors also attended the program as one of its objectives was student engagement especially in the contests to be conducted. College Dean Dr. Laura Boller, along with the COED instructors graced the opening of activities.
Dr. Boller, in her welcome remarks put emphasis on how the past years’ celebrations were all done virtually and now has finally come to an end.
“I believe and I confirm that we have survived those years of having virtual celebrations,” she said.
She then congratulated the organizers, especially the present officers of SEM for coming up with a simple and quick launching of the activities for this month-long festivity.
“And of course, I would like to express appreciation to our English mentors who have been very supportive in this desire for a face-to-face onsite celebration,” Dr. Boller added.
Contests to be held during Fridays this month include Quiz Bee, Essay Writing, Poetry Writing, Debate, Impromptu Speech, Spoken Word Poetry, Greek Mythology Cosplay, and Declamation that SEM promoted both in the opening program and in their official Facebook page.
SEM President Darryl Peñaranda encouraged students from all college departments “to participate in the said contests for there are exciting prizes waiting for you”.
“For more details and the mechanics of the contests, you may visit our official Facebook page ‘Society of English Majors’ where you can access the [Google] Form for registration,” Peñaranda said further.
