Celebrating the 20th Charter Day of Samar State University (SSU), the SSU Museum and Archives, headed by its director Jhonil Bajado, launched Siyahan nga Pagsipat: A History Forum & Pictorial History Exhibit on Friday, November 22.
In a historic first, the event unveiled the portrait of the first principal of SSU’s predecessor, the Samar Trade School (STS).
The program commenced with a historical lecture on SSU’s origins delivered by Bajado at the CAS-Audiovisual Center. The lecture traced the history of the school’s administration and corrected inaccuracies in the recorded accounts of the university’s first school heads.
“I found out that the first principal was not James, but Cyrus M. Waddell. And the second principal was not Frederick Mason, but Mr. Edgar S. Maxson. The genesis of Samar State University, the Samar Trade School, was not a laboratory shop of Samar Provincial High School, now Samar National School,” Bajado said on his discovery of the erroneous details in the minimally known records of SSU’s history.
This was proceeded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the unveiling of the Pictorial History Exhibit at the SSU Convention Center, which will remain open to the public until November 29.
The event was attended by distinguished guests, faculty, and students, including the Dean of the College of Education (host college of this year’s Charter Day celebration), Dr. Laura Boller; the Vice President for Administration and Finance, Engr. Ma. Lourdes Amante; and the Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, Dr. Gina Españo.
The said undertaking was organized in partnership with the Social Studies Circle, and selected students of the College of Industrial Technology (CIT).
