Residents of Catbalogan City are advised to take precautions as according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index is expected to soar to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius tomorrow, May 21, 2024.
Alongside with Catarman, Northern Samar, the city is second to Guiuan, Eastern Samar with 50 degrees Celsius as places with highest heat index in Eastern Visayas.
Said forecast follows the recent highest computed indexes in Catbalogan reaching 45°C and 44°C on May 17 and May 18, respectively.
This feels-like temperature, which combines the actual air temperature with humidity, can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke, dehydration, heat rash, and fainting if proper precautions are not taken.
Here are some tips from PAGASA to beat the heat:
- Drink plenty of water and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing.
- Limit strenuous activity, especially during the hottest part of the day.
- Take cool showers or baths.
- Stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked car.
