In concept, the idea of social justice seems simple, but this journey is a long and arduous one that involves several moving parts with issues deeply rooted in how we operate as a society that slowly leans more and more toward prioritizing self-gain.
Social justice is not a destination, rather it is a continuous journey toward creating a society that is equitable and inclusive, where everyone is treated and respected as an individual not just as another cog in the machine.
Social justice is not about imposing a one-size-fits-all solution. Social justice embodies the principle that every individual in our society have the rights and should have equal access to resources and opportunities regardless of their identity, background, or socioeconomic status. In this sense, recognizing and accomodating to the diverse perspectives and needs within our society is detrimental in attaining true social justice.
While tasks of this scale usually require a systemic change involving insitutional reforms, which lead to most being intimidated and just leaving it up to the people in positions of power, our individual actions are just as important and are something not to be trivialized. Even the smallest and simplest acts of understanding and kindness can have far-reaching effects.
Each one of us has a significant role to play because we have the power to challenge discriminatory behavior, and to advocate for marginalized communities. By recognizing the power that our individual actions hold, through our collective efforts, we can be the catalysts of change, moving toward a society where every voice is heard, and every person’s rights matter.
A little goes a long way. Be the change you want to see.
