Every February, Filipinos celebrate Civil Registration Month, as declared by Proclamation No. 682 on January 28, 1991. This year marks the 34th annual Civil Registration Month, and its observation reminds us of our duties and responsibilities to register vital events in our lives to appropriate civil registry offices.
Civil registration plays a pivotal role in the progress and improvement of a nation, as it is the official recording of vital acts and events in the lives of its citizens. This is to emphasize the importance of registering life events such as births, marriages, and deaths, as well as any legal changes in their civil status.
By following the mandatory civil registration under Republic Act 37653, Filipinos can ensure that they have correct and accurate records of their identity and status. This makes it easier for them to access and avail of various services and benefits from both public and private sectors, such as education, healthcare, insurance, employment, social security, and property rights.
Now that we know the importance of civil registration to our society, as well as its impact on our communal and individual lives, let us come together in the observation and celebration of this month. It is our duty and responsibility to record vital acts and events in our lives, for however small this effort may be on an individual basis, it is a great effort collectively.
