Parol-making among Kapampangan is more than a livelihood-it’s their story.
Our artistic excellence and pride for our cultural heritage as Filipinos already graced various platforms, even in the global scene for instance “Luzviminda” worn by Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray as her National Costume for the said competition. Its gargantuan backdrop features Pampanga’s “Parol” or Christmas lantern designs.
Last September 18, Pampanga, peopled with craftsmen who breathe life stories into their lantern designs, was officially recognized as the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines” under House Bill No. 6933. Beyond the sentiments that this town is already proving itself worthy of the label through its non-ephemeral creations of Christmas lanterns, this achievement ripples effect in the political facets and socio-economic aspects. This recognition could help support Pampanga in making our Yuletide season more special every year by highlighting their pivotal role and spot in our government’s tourism promotion even in seasons beyond christmas.
As we approach six days before Christmas day, may our hope for a future, amid the darkness of life problems, remain within us as we rise above problems, and be as enduring as the bright, colorful lights which radiate in a parol.
