Building Trust in Science.
World Science Day for Peace and Development is celebrated annually on November 10th, serving as a reminder of the crucial role of science in promoting peace, sustainable development, and societal progress. Since its inception by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001, this day has provided a platform to recognize the immense contributions of science and its potential to address global challenges.
Science has the remarkable ability to transcend borders, cultures, and ideologies, fostering cooperation and understanding among nations. Through scientific collaboration, countries can come together to address common challenges, share knowledge, and build trust. By promoting open dialogue and fostering international scientific partnerships, World Science Day for Peace and Development acts as a catalyst for peace, breaking down barriers and bridging differences.
“Basic sciences can and should be our best allies to respond to contemporary challenges. During this decisive time of climate disruption, supporting scientific development and fostering scientific understanding is no longer an option, it is a necessity,” a message by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.
By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.
