Students from different colleges and satellite campuses gathered for the Grand Opening program of this school year’s Palaro, the collegiate intramurals, at the Samar State University school grounds on October 21.
Dr. Redentor Palencia, the University President, officially commenced the Palaro 2024, followed by the lighting of the Palaro Urn, led by Dr. Randy Pacadaljen, the Sports Development Program Director, together with SSU’s basketball team and the SIAS, SCUAA 2023, and EVCAA Season 2 champions, the SSU Deer.
As the athletes pledged to compete with fair play and sportsmanship through the Oath of Amateurism, the officiating officials pledged to uphold the integrity of the games.
In his inspirational message, Dr. Palencia stated, “[Palaro] is not just about building your interpersonal skills or enhancing your academic performance. It is also about ensuring that you are physically and mentally healthy—it is also a practice of mindfulness… as we enjoy, as we indulge in 2024 Palaro, let us be constantly mindful—taking control of our thoughts, thereby taking control of our emotions, which will surely lead to favorable outcomes, a manifestation of character as a university.”
The university banner was then hoisted by the university president, together with the four vice presidents, signifying unity and pride as one university. This was followed by the raising of the unit banners and the release of doves as a symbol of hope, peace, and unity.
Furthermore, the 2024 Palaro will be continued on the following week, October 28-29, after a three-day class suspension due to Tropical Storm Kristine and another day for the 51st anniversary celebration of the Catbalogan Public and Private School Teachers and Employees (CPPSTEA) held at the Samar Capitol Grounds.
