71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and every year millions of tons of our trash end up polluting these bodies of water. We disrupt ecosystems, harm marine life, and eventually endanger our own lives through unknowingly consuming seafood that have eaten micro plastics.
Every third Saturday of September each year, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) along with hundreds of thousands of volunteers come together to rid rivers, lakes, and beaches around the world of trash. Data collected during ICC are cited and used in scientific research to develop both our understanding of the plastic problem as well as informing solutions.
We created this problem and we should be held accountable to make things right. Even a little bit goes a long way. Happy Coastal Cleanup Day! 🌊
