Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Industrial Technology (CIT), and Mercedes Campus of Samar State University composed the second batch of graduates in the university’s 89th Commencement Exercises held at SSU Gymnasium on June 27, 2024.
A total of 635 students proudly called themselves graduates on Thursday, with 246 from CAS, 191 from CIT, and 198 from SSU Mercedes Campus.
In his welcome address, Jan Andrei Siasat, a Cum Laude of Bachelor of Science in Psychology, expressed his gratitude and shared words of encouragement with his fellow graduates.
“Today, we leave the lands of Samar State University and go out into the world searching for what’s next. I hope that years from now, we look back on this day with much pride knowing that we’ve come so far. But for now, I hope you don’t forget to try, to keep on doing your best, and to be of service to other people,” Siasat said.
Furthermore, due to unforeseen events, Director Rey Albert B. Uy of Civil Service Commission Samar Field Office took on the role of commencement speaker, reminding the graduates of the essence of leadership—that it is not about titles or positions, but about action and being an example.
“It’s about stepping forward, charting the course, or inspiring others to follow. It’s about setting a standard so high that it becomes a beacon for all to follow,” according to Dir. Uy.
He also remarked that “true leaders are those who empower others.”
Meanwhile, Lea Mae D. Eliveros, a Cum Laude from Bachelor of Technical-Vocational Teacher Education (BT-VTED), shared a heartfelt message in her thanksgiving address, urging her fellow graduates to “remember that challenges are part of life, but we must not be discouraged by the hardships we encountered.”
“If we stumble along the way, it’s okay to shed tears if needed, but always remember to stand up with our heads held high,” she added, serving as a reminder of the resilience they cultivated during their time at their beloved alma mater.
The ceremony also marked the graduates’ transition from students to alumni as the Vice President for Administration and Finance and Alumni Regent, Engr. Ma. Lourdes P. Amante, led the induction of graduates into the alumni association.
