Catbalogan City, Samar remains one of the areas in the Philippines and in Eastern Visayas to experience high heat index levels over 40°C, according to the updated computed and daily heat index values of PAGASA as of 5 PM, May 5, 2024.
With reference to the said chart, PAGASA stated that an area could be categorized under “danger” level if it records a heat index of 42°C to 51°C.
In addition, Samar State University shifted to asynchronous learning modality on May 2 and 3 in response to extremely high apparent temperatures reaching 42°C and 40°C, respectively.
Meanwhile, classes will resume the regular schedule tomorrow, May 6, as there is no recent advisory regarding high heat index.

Through Executive Order No. 05-002 s. 2024, the Office of the Catbalogan City Mayor suspended face-to-face classes and implemented asynchronous classes/distance learning in all public and private elementary, secondary, and tertiary schools in Catbalogan City on May 6.
Alongside this, the Office of the University President also issued an advisory to SSU teaching personnel across all campuses to conduct asynchronous modality today.
