Work and classes are suspended—music to anyone’s ears. Sadly, not all of us are dealt the same hand. While some may be sleeping in warm and cozy beds, our brothers and sisters in Northern Samar may not have gotten any sleep due to massive flooding brought on by nonstop rain from a low-pressure area and shear line.
While most of us get time off work and school, some endure floods almost reaching second-storey homes, landslides, and power outages. Reality is harsh; it reminds me of the rain scene from the movie Parasite (2019).
As of writing this, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Northern Samar has placed the province under a State of Calamity. An estimated 74,500 families are severely affected by the onslaught of nonstop rains and widespread floods.
Here’s what we can do to help:
- Collect and Donate Essential Supplies to Local Relief Efforts. Essential supplies include non-perishable food items, clean and safe drinking water, clothing, hygiene products, medical supplies, basic tools, and communication devices such as radios and flashlights, portable stoves, and disposable plates and utensils. Diapers and baby wipes for infants and young children are also needed.
- Advocate for Government Support. Use your voice to advocate for an increase in government support and intervention in affected areas. Reach out to local representatives to share information on the situation and urge authorities to provide assistance as fast as possible.
- Coordinate with Volunteer Organizations. Volunteers are needed for various tasks like the distribution of relief goods, providing medical assistance, and helping with cleanup efforts. Check with local volunteer organizations or non-governmental organizations to find ways you can assist.
- Mobilize Fundraising Campaigns. Even small contributions add up, and collective efforts can have significant impacts in providing relief to those in need.
- Stay Informed and Spread Awareness on Social Media. Use social media platforms to raise awareness and provide updates on the ongoing situation. Share reliable information on trustworthy donation channels, emergency contact numbers, and updates on relief efforts.
Like that of a game of poker, not everyone is dealt the same hand, some may be more fortunate than others and for some it just isn’t their day. All of us have our own trials and tribulations and at the same time each and every one of us has the innate capability to do good and help others in need. In times of adversity, helping is not limited to providing material and monetary aid, even the simple act of spreading awareness on social media is already a big help. So, let’s come together and make the most of the hands that we’ve been dealt as even the smallest contributions can have a huge impact, and through our collective efforts, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Northern Samar during their time of need.
