Samar State University, represented by Allean Vince Chua, a fourth-year student taking up Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering, won the first place for Commissioner’s Award and Best Poster Award during this year’s three-month long International Sustainable Development Goals (ISDGs) Bootcamp or ISB, held online from June to August together with Ms. Violeta Imperial as the mentor in adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Chua was the only participant from Region 8 who joined the bootcamp attended by selected students from the Philippines and international universities including Indonesia, Thailand, and Bangladesh. He was teamed to work with representatives from Bulacan State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Western Mindanao State University in conceptualizing group projects related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout the event.
“We were able to propose a project called Coastal Women’s Mangrove Alliance for Nature (CoWoMAN), which aims to combat climate change while also empowering women and providing them livelihood options through Backyard Mangrove Nurseries in coastal communities in Tarlac,” Chua said in an interview.
The mentioned research proposal “manifested Climate Action, Gender Equality, Life below Water, and No Poverty” which are four of the core SDGs.
“During those times [I] was also having my OJT so I had to be flexible to balance what were needed to be done,” said Chua.
ISB was a virtual event organized by Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), SEED4Com, and six (6) other academic higher education institutions in coordination with National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) with the goal of engaging students, educators, and professional participants from different cultural, economic, and social backgrounds in addressing and proposing solutions to problems related to any of the sustainable development goals.
