In a recently concluded webinar conducted by The Tradesman with a theme “ON THE BEAT: Campus Journalism in the Age of Misinformation and its role in Socio-Political Context” via Zoom Meeting on Friday, April 29, 2022. The Publication invited Mr. Lance Lim, a Journalist fellow at Rappler and the multi-awarded GMA Reporter, Marisol Abdurahman as the highly esteemed speakers in educating young minds about the role of the Journalist in an age where misinformation proliferating and its role in a democratic elections.
There are 104 registered participants from the following schools: Hinabangan National High School (An Manarabot) Abuyog Community College (The Honeycomb Campus Media), Catbalogan National Comprehensive High School (The Comprehension), Silanga National High School (Ang Manlalayag/The Sailor),Saint Mary’s College of Catbalogan (The Horizon), Christ the King College (The Scepter), Samar National School (The/Ang Samariñan), Saint Paul’s School of Professional Studies (Paulinian Scribe) and Visayas State University (Amaranth).
The Editor-In-Chief of The Tradesman Student Publication, Charlote Pornias, expressed her opening message. “Just because it feels right and conforms with what you believe does not mean it’s true. You have to take responsibility for what you communicate to others,” said Pornias.
Journalists remain at the forefront in line. Lance Paolo Lim, a Rappler journalist, and a former writer in ABS-CBN discussed Fake News Alert: The Role of Journalism in fighting confusion and ignorance. He stated that “We need to amplify the voices in our communities. The role of campus journalists goes beyond the far corners of the student publication office or the University’s premises,” Lim added.
As an upholder of truth and justice, Marisol Abdurahman, a Professional Television Journalist and Reporter at GMA News, discussed about Media in Democratic Election. She said that Journalists have to be fair, impartial, and objective. “We are considered as the watchdog of these three states of the government: legislative, executive, and judicial,” Abdurahman added.
She also expressed and shared her knowledge and experiences as a professional Journalist and as a reporter. “We’re all writing not to impress but to express,” Abdurahman stated.
The participants have actively asked questions varying from how to carry on with their job as watchdogs and truth-teller when faced with attacks and threats, how one can differentiate fake news from the truth, and why is the press fundamental to society.
The Tradesman Adviser, Alfrevilyn G. Dasig, expressed her inspirational talk and shared her thoughts about truth and communication and the Managing Editor, Kent Bryan Torres, expressed his message for the event’s closing remarks.
